a life of ministry, day 1

Come to Stillness: Take a few minutes to allow your mind and heart to be still before God.

Opening Prayer:

Dear Jesus,
     Help us to spread your fragrance everywhere we go.  Flood our souls with your Spirit and life.  Penetrate and possess our whole being so utterly that our lives may only be a radiance of yours.  Shine through us and so be in us that every soul we come I contact with may feel your presence in our soul.  Let them look up and see no longer us but only You.  Stay with us and then we shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be light to others.  The light, O Jesus, will be all from you.  None of it will be ours.  It will be you shining on others through us.  Let us thus praise you in the way you love best by shining on those around us.  Amen.  (The Daily Prayer of Mother Teresa)

Psalm for the Week: Psalm 145

Scripture for the Day: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-12

Reading for Reflection:

More and more, the desire grows in me simply to walk around, greet people, enter their homes, sit on their doorsteps, play ball, and be known as someone who wants to live with them.  It is a privilege to have the time and the freedom to practice this simple ministry of presence.  Still, it is not as simple as it seems.  My own desire to be useful, to do something significant, or be a part of some impressive project is so strong that soon my time is taken up by meetings, conferences, study groups, and workshops that prevent me from walking the streets.  It is difficult not to have plans, not to organize people around the urgent cause, and not to feel that you are working directly for social or spiritual progress.  But I wonder more and more if the first thing shouldn't be to know people by name, to eat and drink with them, to listen to their stories and tell your own, and to let them know with words, handshakes, and hugs that you do not simply like them, but truly love them.  (Gracias! by Henri J.M. Nouwen)

Prayer: for the church, for others, for myself

Song for the Week: Be Thou My Vision

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that thou art;
Thou my best thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true Word;
I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I thy true son,
Thou in me dwelling and I in thee one.

Riches I heed not, nor all empty praise;
Thou mine inheritance, now and always;
Thou and thou only, first in my heart,
High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.

High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.

Closing Prayer:
Almighty God, cause your good gifts to flow in and through my life and ministry this day and always.  Amen. (A Guide to Prayer by Rueben P. Job and Norman Shawchuck)

give your life away, day 7

Come to Stillness: Take a few minutes to allow your mind and heart to be still before God.

Opening Prayer:

Dear Jesus,
     Help me to realize the many voices of hunger, the many sounds of thirst, the many cries of loneliness, the many callings of sickness and nakedness and imprisonment.  Help me to hear in all of them something of You calling to me to become more than I am.  More understanding.  More compassionate.  More involved.  More like You. (Reflections on the Word by Ken Gire)

Psalm for the Week: Psalm 82

Scripture for the Day: Luke 14:1-14

Reading for Reflection:

Christ has no body now on earth but yours;
yours are the only hands with which he can do his work,
yours are the only feet with which he can go about the world,
yours are the only eyes through which his compassion
can shine forth upon a troubled world.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.
                                                ~Teresa of Avila

Prayer: for the church, for others, for myself

Song for the Week: For All the Saints

For all the saints, who from their labors rest,
who thee by faith before the world confessed,
thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;
thou Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;
thou in the darkness drear, their one true light.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold,
fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,
and win with them the victor's crown of gold.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

O blest communion, fellowship divine!
We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;
yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long,
steals on the ear the distant triumph song,
and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast,
through gates of pearl streams in the countless host,
singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost:
Alleluia, Alleluia!

Closing Prayer:
Go forth now as God’s servant.  Remember God’s presence often and draw strength from the knowledge that the One who calls and sends also sustains.  Amen. (A Guide to Prayer by Rueben P. Job and Norman Shawchuck)

Psalm for the Week: Psalm 82

Scripture for the Day: Colossians 1:24-2:5

Reading for Reflection:

The more you are called to speak for God’s love, the more you will need to deepen the knowledge of that love in your own heart.  The farther the outward journey takes you, the deeper the inward journey must be.  Only when your roots are deep can your fruits be abundant.  The enemy is there, waiting to destroy you, but you can face the enemy without fear when you know that you are held safe in the love of Jesus. Psalm for the Week: Psalm 82

Scripture for the Day: Luke 15:1-7

Reading for Reflection:

I gaze lovingly at my dinner plate filled with gifts from the earth.  I am touched, overwhelmed at the truth that everything I eat has in some way had to die so I could live.  It is the way of the earth, and I do not completely understand it.  Ponder over the truth for a while.  It may bring tears to your eyes.  And if it does, I encourage you to welcome them.  They could be healing.
     I gaze more lovingly still.  Gratitude overflows!  I ask my heart a hard question:  What is it in me that must die before I can truly give life to others? (Seasons of the Heart by Macrina Wiederkehr)

Reading for Reflection:

An old rabbi was once asked why so few people were finding God.  He wisely replied that people are not willing to look that low.  Jesus was born in a stable, and God is especially concerned for the poorest, the lowliest, the lost, and the neglected. (Liberation of Life by Harvey and Lois Seifert)

Put yourself completely under the influence of Jesus, so that he may think his thoughts in your mind, do his work through your hands, for you will be all-powerful with him to strengthen you. (A Gift for God by Mother Teresa)

(Reflections on the Word by Ken Gire)

Psalm for the Week: Psalm 82

Scripture for the Day: Luke 14:25-35

Reading for Reflection:

The journey between the dreaming and the coming true is a journey made on holy ground.  It is a journey made through silence and longing where, if we will listen, we can hear the whisper of the Dreamer echoing deep within us, calling us to become what the Dreamer sees when our names were first whispered:  saints who believe in and pay attention for and recognize the Voice; saints who live our lives in joy and confidence and hope rather than judgment and anxiety and desperation; saints whose hours and days and lives are spent carrying people to the Christ, lending each other a hand when one has fallen, slipping along the river that brings joy to the heart of God, carrying God’s peace and love and presence and life to those we meet along the way.
     That is what we have been sent here to do.  And we will.  The Dreamer’s dream will always come true. (Between the Dreaming and the Coming True by Robert Benson)

Psalm for the Week: Psalm 82

Scripture for the Day: Isaiah 61:1-6

Reading for Reflection:

     Real training for service asks for a hard and often painful process of self-emptying.  The main problem of service is to be a way without being “in the way.”  And if there are any tools, techniques and skills to be learned they are primarily to plow the field, to cut the weeds and clip the branches, that is, to take away the obstacles for real growth and development.  Training for service is not a training to become rich but to become voluntarily poor; not to fulfill ourselves but to empty ourselves; not to conquer God but to surrender to his saving power.  All this is very hard to accept in our contemporary world, which tells us about the importance of power and influence.  But it is important that in this world there remain a few voices crying out that if there is anything to boast of, we should boast of our weakness.  Our fulfillment is in offering emptiness, our usefulness in becoming useless, our power in becoming powerless.
