Scripture: Luke 9:10-11
Journal: When Jesus spoke to the crowds about the kingdom of God, what do you
think he said? Why do you think the
crowds were so drawn to what he was saying?
What does this look like today?
Reflection:
There is something about a community of people
living together in a qualitatively different way that just draws others to
it. It is like moths to a flame. That’s the way it was with Jesus. There was just something about him, about the
way he lived and the way he spoke, that always attracted a crowd. It could’ve been the way he welcomed the
outcast. It most certainly involved the
way he healed the broken. And
without a doubt it had to do with the way he fed the hungry. But I think it was more than that. I think there was a presence in Jesus that
people were even hungrier for. There was
a depth and a substance and a quality about him that was exactly what people
were longing for. It was the kingdom of
God. The kingdom of God was at
hand. The King was in the kingdom, and
people just couldn’t stay away.
So when Jesus spoke to the
crowds about the kingdom of God, he was not telling them about something that
was distant and far away. He was telling
them about something they could already see, that they had already
noticed. He was speaking to them about
something they had already gotten a taste of.
That’s the way the kingdom of God works.
It is a way of being the presence of God in the world that works
itself out into the way we live our lives in our communities. It is not only something that is to come, it
is also something that is here and now.
And if it is not here and now, no one will care to hear anything about
it in the first place. But once they get
a taste of it, they can’t hear enough.
At least that’s the way it was for the 5,000 who were fed this day. How is it for you?
Prayer
Closing
Prayer: Lord Jesus, today may your kingdom come, may your will be done, on
earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
